The Craigavon Cycle Trail is a thirty-five mile cycle ride through the Borough of Craigavon linking inland waterways, the shores of Lough Neagh and picturesque villages. The level, traffic-free sections through City Park and the Newry to Portadown Canal are suitable for family or novice cyclists whilst the undulating countryside of County Armagh offers magnificent vistas of Slieve Croob and the distant Mourne Mountains for those wishing to explore the area.

Northern Ireland's first off road mountain bike trail has been officially openned at the Craigavon Water Sports Centre.

The NIO Minister for the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, David Hanson MP, officially declared the trail open on Thursday 8th September.

The trail signalled the end of a 3 year project, between CAAN, Craigavon Borough Council and Dafydd Davis of WalesTrails who designed the trail, which is the only mountain Bike trail in any city park in the world!
 
  • Suitable for - Intermediate cyclist/mountain bikers with basic off road riding skills. Mountain bikes or hybrids. Trail and surface type - As 'green' plus specially constructed bike tracks and bridleways, byways and unsurfaced unclassified roads. Most gradients moderate but may include short steep sections. Trail surface may include small obstacles of roots and rock. Suggested fitness level - A good standard of fitness can help. Potential risk - These trails carry a moderate risk of accident.The trail is 10.6kms long with 7kms of singletrack. The singletrack trail is narrow, no more than 600mm wide, with an earth or stone surface. The singletrack trails are suitable for a range of abilities of cyclist from novice riders to experienced mountain bikers, also suitable for kids but only those that are competent cyclists.
  • Follow the blue circular waymarkers with the words moderate cycle trail around the edge to get around the trail.
  • You can pick up a free Trail Card shown below from various outlets including the Watersports Centre or Tel. 028 9030 3930 and they will post one out to you.

Local Cycling Clubs

The biggest local club is  Apollo Cycling Team

 

Training rides take place every Sunday morning at 9.30 am, sharp.  Riders meet outside the police station in Church Place. 
Helmets are compulsory.
The training rides are normally 50-60 miles in distance with groups of riders branching off to complete shorter and longer rides.  The club runs are shared by al of the local clubs.
Newcomers are very welcome

Mountain bike rides are run most Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6pm.  Rides start from Wheels N Motion and are quite relaxed - usually lasting 1 hour.
Helmets are compulsory.
Lights are a necessity

Another local club is Clann Eireann.  The club is mostly based around the road racing discipline and like Apollo CT both clubs have a strong background in Junior and underage racing.
